So here are a few pointers to help you in your job search.

You are your own sales tool…
Make sure you represent yourself with a good resume.  Typos stand out in a resume, don’t have any. Keep your cover letter short and to the point.  You have one chance at getting the hiring manager to want to look at your resume, use it wisely.

There is a difference between follow up and stalking…
If you are sending a resume or filling out an application online, you want to know if they received it, I get that.  Give it 3-4 days before you contact anyone, likely there are many other people applying for that job as well.  One email or phone call to show interest and assure your information was received is acceptable, daily correspondence is not.

Consider all interactions of an opportunity…
Let everyone know you are looking for work and what you are looking for!  Be optimistic and positive about your search, even on the days you don’t feel it.  Consider all avenues in which you might make a connection.

You got the interview, now what…

Be prepared.  Before you meet with a potential employer, know who they are and what they do.  Look at their website and go in knowing a little about the organization.  It will help you ask good questions and understand what the interviewer is talking about.

Be present.   Arrive 5 minutes early, leave your phone in the car, have a pen to take notes, and dress like you want the job.  I am not a fan of all the rules surrounding dress codes, but I am a fan of being neat and organized in your attire.  Interviewing for an office job, dress for the office job, not for a day at the beach.  Interviewing for a manufacturing position, dress for the interview, not necessarily how you will dress on the floor.
